The Last Line is a collaborative writing game. Every story is built one line at a time, by different people — and no one knows how it ends, including the person who began it.
Someone writes an opening line and sets a genre and a length. Everyone else writes what might come next. The story’s author chooses the line that carries it forward, and the next writer picks up from there — line by line, until someone writes the last one.
And every day brings a new challenge to write inside — a Dare, set by the app: a form, a limit, or a rule the next story has to honour.
Not every line gets chosen, but the ones that don’t aren’t thrown away. They’re kept beside the line that won, unsigned, and judged on nothing but how good they are. Some of the best writing here never made it into a story. We call them Dead Lines.
And they don’t always stay dead. If enough readers prefer a Dead Line to the one that won, the story forks — the Dead Line takes its place, and a new version of the story grows from that turn.
